The Guardian- Representation (After School)
Representation
What stories are present?
-Me too campaign ( reflects the liberal values of the guardian in which they believe women are entitled to the same opportunities as men)
What issues are present?
-Normality of sexual assault between woman, and the guardian (raises awareness for this showing full support and encouragement for the movement.)
Who is present? Who is absent?
-Strong powerful image on the front of a woman (represents independence and equality, lack of male dominance suggests womens unreliance on men and their survival without them.)
How have they been represented?
-Nigella lawson in sky box has been represented as a stereotypical woman(in the kitchen, although her job takes on a more traditional women role)- this feature on the magazine may contradict the campaigning of women fighter for equality and power in todays society and proving that they are more than just housewives.
How has language and the images been used? What meaning is created?
-Dominant image on the front creates a powerful sense of strength and determination which is highly associated with the campaign (sense of overcoming leaves women in a powerful position to move on from sexual assault and prevent it for other women)
How does this link to contexts of the time?
Nigella Lawson in the kitchen represents women from old stereotype, acting as the homemakers , contrast to main image represents women as powerful and dominant linking to modern contextual ideas of women.
How does it support the Scott Trust values?
-Reflects the journalistic freedom and liberal values of the Guardian free from commercial or political interference( not everyone would agree that women are equal to en but this new liberal article is presented in their magazine)
Construction
-Media text is put together
(MAG/ NEWSPAPER: includes the layout and writing as well as the choice of images)
Mediation
-Process everything goes through before it reaches an audience
(Can be how newspaper or magazine photographs are cropped and captioned, or how real life events - like a protest or a speech by a politician - are portrayed in a news report)
Selection
-What has been selected to include in a media text.
(Newspaper articles, selecting certain facts over others which could change the angle of a story; what is omitted is sometimes as important as what is included)
Anchorage
-The words that go along with images to give those pictures a certain meaning in a specific context.
(E.G Captions and headlines in newspapers and taglines in adverts or on film posters)
Stereotypes
-Simplified representation of a person, groups of people or a place, through basic or obvious characteristics(exaggerated)
Ideologies
-Ideas and beliefs, held by media producers, which are often represented in their media texts.
(Newspaper, the ideology of the owner or senior editors could influence the way certain stories are represented, such as lending support to a particular political party)
Different platforms } representation
Comment is free section: Observer main commentators, many blogging for the first time, who will be joined by a host of outside contributors - politicians, academics, writers, scientists, activists and of course existing bloggers to debate, argue and occasionally agree on the issues of the day. (community)
Views on articles - comments to build debate and conversations
-White people mainly featured on website, instagram is multicultural (cool to be multicultural)
-Hard news is mainly featured on the website and lack on social media sites (especially instagram) - as the target audience would not appeal to the hard news and would be more attracted in reading soft news about culture (music/tv) instead of about politics .
